ANNUAL REPORT: 2011-12
Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra CKSK has
brought lasting changes in the lives of vulnerable children, youths and
women in various aspects of life. The Organization and its beneficiaries
always remain indebted to ChildFund India, Manos Unidas, TDSS, Bridge
Foundation and well-wishers without whose generous financial support;
one would not have seen the smiles on the faces of unfortunates’
brethren. Here is the annual report of the programs conducted in the
year 2011-2012.
Anganavadi Quality Improvement Program (AQIP):
For AQIP 10 backward preschools were selected where 174 girls and 146
Boys benefited from various activities like distribution of play
materials, trainings, talent promotions etc. The Project conducted
meeting with Balavikas Committees, gave training to mothers on best
Child Care practices and trained on the role and responsibilities of BVC
and community members. 260 Mothers gained knowledge on best parenting
skills and children do enjoy their childhood. 10 BVCs collected Rupees
2000 each to purchase Play materials for their Anganavadis. BVC members
do take active role in functioning and development of the Anganavadis,
they organize program such as talent show, children day programs.
The Project gave awareness on Antenatal & Postnatal Care in five
clusters; it was useful to the rural vulnerable women as they were
unaware of the same. 320 members participated and benefited from this
program. 62 pregnant women, 70 mothers received training and gained
knowledge on ANC/PNC. 62 new born babies and mothers are healthy. In the
15 villages of the Project areas there was no IMR/MMR this year.
Awareness on Contagious diseases :
Awareness on Contagious diseases was organized and in the programme
altogether 350 women participated and were educated on Health and
cleanliness/ H1N1/Maleria/Dengue/Chikun Gunya with the collaboration of
PHCs. Through this program 8 were detected and were given referrals. As
a result of this program Asha workers and ANM do visit villages and
motivate the people to take precautionary measures. Women now do keep
their surrounding clean and neat and are aware of the precautionary
measures to prevent the contagious diseases.
Breast feeding Campaign:
Awareness is given to the members of the communities about the Breast
feeding and Breast Cancer and 2 were initially detected and referred to
the district hospital. 700 women came to know about the importance of
first Hour breast feeding and colostrums. They also learnt to combat
breast cancer. In 5 clusters 35 deliveries were found and among them all
feed colostrums. Remaining 665 mothers are motivated to share the same
information in their respective communities.
Community Healthcare:
Poor people availed monthly health checkups and other government schemes
like pension for special children support to Hiv infected etc.
altogether 200 mothers and 172 children benefited. 10 children malaria
cases were referred to the Government hospital.
Documentation:
Success stories and best practices of the project is video documented.
The documentation is of 20 minutes. It has become handy to present
various successful case studies to the visitors, funding agencies.
Emergency needs:
Due to natural calamities and high risk involved ill health cases
were provided some motivational support and referred to the Government
hospital and three families were referred to Panchayat for the financial
support to construct the houses. 17 women 3 men affected due to natural
calamities and high risk ill health cases were supported and referred to
the Government hospitals for further treatment. The project referred
three families affected houses to the Panchayat, who received support
for the construction of the same.
Healthy Baby Show: As per their height, weight, health status prizes
distributed for the healthy babies in the community. Awareness is given
to the community on best child care practices. The BVCs and mothers do
organize the same program every year. The Project conducted program in 2
villages, also gave training on child care practices. 20 female babies
and 15 male babes and 300 mothers benefitted from this training program.
Parenting Training to community:
Through parenting training the mothers were sensitized about the
parenting skills and the child care practices and child parent
relationship. 135 mothers were enlightened about the relationship
between child and parent and important measures to be taken to improve
the same.
Positive Deviant Hearth Programme was organized in 5 communities and as
a result 120 mothers learnt good many practices for the healthy growth
of the child. There were 130 kids participated in this program. In the 5
clusters when surveyed 15 malnourished children were found. Now these 15
children’s mothers do practice nutrition food preparation. Then Kitchen
garden training was given to the 120 mothers. As result these children
have moved from C grade to B grade.
Supply of Spirulina:
Surveyed the area and listed the malnourished children, then
Distributed Spirulina sweet candies to three preschool kids, to increase
the health and nutritious status. Altogether 41 boys and 49 girls of
Anganavady received the sweet candies and whose growth is now under
monitoring.
Support to Differently abled children:
Celebrated Special children’ day, information on care and special
education provided to Parents & care givers of Special children. 10
special children received ID cards and now they receive pension. Support
was given to 14 Boys, 23 girls for their continuation of studies,
Medicine and nutritious food.
The project supported 8 Boys and 24 Girls affected and infected of Hiv-aids
to further their studies, some medical support.
Support to Preschool:
The places where government Balwadies is nonexistent, the project
supported 3 communities comprising of 90 children for free preschool
facility and growth of nutritious level. These children receive
nutritious food like nutimix, spirolena, grains etc all these 90
children are in A grade and no malnutrition is recorded among these
children.
Teaching Learning Material & Play materials to Preschools, 12 backward
preschools received Play materials which covered under project area.
Deprived children do enjoy various sports and improve their talents and
get space for development and participation. 192 boys and 180 Girl
children benefited from this program. The attendance now in these 12
preschools is much better than earlier. Earlier there was 55% attendance
now it has been raised to 80%.
Training to Government Preschool teachers:
Training is given to government preschool teachers to improve their
knowledge about preschool education and creative and innovative
activities like psycho-social support to the children. 102 preschool
teachers learnt on creative child care practices, innovative skills to
develop the motor skills of kids.
Training to staffs on ICDS:
The training is given to the 25 staff members on ICDS schemes and
facilities and they in return share the same information with the
community members and these women have received many schemes. 4 mothers
received Bhagya lakshmi bond. 5 women received Udyogini yogane scheme
for self-employment. One Hiv-affected girl has received educational
support under ICDS scheme, 4 defiantly challenged received Government Id
card for the pension scheme
The project selected 2 preschools for wall painting, which helps
children to improve their identification of skills. In 2 preschools
alphabets, flowers, trees, wild animals, pet animals, birds, colours,
shapes etc were drawn on the Preschool walls to create better atmosphere
in the preschools and to help children to acquire identification of
skills.
The Project with the support of PDS and CDPO celebrated the World
nutrition Day at 3 places. Demonstration on the preparation of
nutritious food and to prepare well the best available low cost food in
the community was done. 350 mothers participated and benefited. Mothers
do prepare nutritious food with best available low cost vegetables and
grains.
Madilu Kitu for infants was organized and in the program altogether 30
kids benefitted from this program. For this program PHC Doctor was
invited who also agreed to support these vulnerable babies and mothers
through Government facilities. These mothers and babies’ details were
submitted to the PHC.
Conducting Children Gramasabha:
89 Girls and 76 Boys participated in children gramasabha and
instilled in them civic sense and good governance values. In 5 schools
students were educated on the importance to preserve Ecological Harmony.
Competitions held on best ways of preserving Ecology, Wild Animals and
Natural Resources. 295 Boys and 315 Girl students participated. Children
resolved to plant saplings and play their role in protecting and
nurturing the forest
Awareness on Child Rights:
In 8 Government schools 432 boys and 472 Girls 200 Parents were
educated on child rights. They are very instrumental in bringing back
the drop out students to the schools.
Child Friendly Schools:
In 5 Government schools, RIP, SIM implemented; SDMCs, school
teachers, parent committee members, Panchayat and other local bodies
joined hands to create child friendly schools through their suggestions,
contribution and financial support. 216 Boys and 399 Girl children
benefited from this program.
Child Friendly Villages:
Through PRA the community people and children listed out various
necessities and requirements to create child friendly atmosphere in the
villages. 95 Girls and 112 Boys benefited from this program.
Children Camp to Enrolled Children:
96 boys and 151 girls enrolled benefited and improved co-curricular
interest. Through this camp children identified their talents such as 25
children for singing, 10 children for drawing, 10 children for acting,
mimicry, 15 children for craft art etc
Articles, poetry, drawing, essays and other talents published twice in
children voice where space was provided to children to articulate their
feeble voice and thus give meaning to their lives.
Global Action Week:
Street play, Awareness on Child care and Education in 4 clusters was
organized and 112 Woman benefited from this program. 250 SHGs identified
18 drop outs and encouraged them for vocational course. Among them 2
went for motor mechanic, 5 AC mechanic, 11 motor widening and plumbing.
NTEE exam:
556 students from 8th standard students trained under National
Talent Entrance Exam. Out of 556 students 444 students passed and avail
the free education facility.
In 12 schools 562 Boys and 661 Girl children encouraged for sports
activities. This support enabled the Government school children to
participate in the Taluka & District level sports activities.
Chilipili Chinnara Mela was organized in 2 schools and 63 Boys and 97
Girls participated and benefited from this programme.
In Reading Improvement Package Program, altogether 220 students were
identified as slow learners through base line survey. They were offered
3 months RIP program to improve their reading skills. Through mid-term
evaluation it was identified 62% improvement in Reading skills.
Readmission of the dropouts:
74 dropouts and 17 child labour were identified and along with
prevention of child labour department necessary steps were taken to
readmit them to the school.
SIM Program:
176 students benefitted from this program and improved their
mathematical Skills. During the final evaluation 86% improvement is seen
in 5th class.
Special session to Pre- Adolescent girls:
230 girls participated and benefited from this program. These girls
over came fear, anxiety, uncertainty with regard to adolescent stage.
Strengthening of Child Parent Relationship:
altogether 600 children and parents participated in this training
program. 86 boys and 214 girl Children and 300 Parents benefited from
this program.
Strengthening of CWBC:
9 Child Wellbeing Committees (consist of 135 members) meet once a
month to discuss about children issues and problems and find solution
for the same. They all are trained in the implementation of child
rights, and as a watch dog committee to eradicate child dropouts, child
labour and other child related issues. They were very much instrumental
in making child friendly environment.
Strengthening of Children clubs:
65 club children participate i.e. 1300 children gained knowledge in
Action songs, Child Rights, general knowledge, civic sense, Government
department, right to information and child rights.
Strengthening of CRC -
Computer knowledge was given to 42 Boys and 54 Girl Children from
the center. 30 boys and 28 girls are trained in basic computer skills,
general knowledge, sports etc in these CRCs.
Training and Follow up on Right to Education:
Taluka Level training is given to 300 School SDMC Committee members and
there after Cluster level information on Right to Education was given to
the SDMCs teachers.
Training on Hygienic Practices to 600 Midday meal cooking staff was
given. The training was based on cleanliness, Hygienic, Nutritious food,
Usage of LPG Gas.
Training on Navodaya Entrance Exam:
72 students trained under this program. The results were quite
encouraging; altogether 61 got passed and are availing the facility.
World day for the Prevention of child abuse:
400 Public became aware about various child harassment issues and
urgency to stop them. Street play and Child rights awareness was given
to the community and public people. 400 families were covered under
Janashree scholarship scheme where 400 deprived children will avail the
scholarship which supports their education.
Adolescent camps:
Through adolescent camp awareness on hygienic and nutritious food
practices was given to the adolescents. 120 girls participated and 5
cases were referred for the counseling.
Advocacy and lobbying with local government: 600 students and college
lectures, 200 SHG women and Panchayat members participated in the
seminar.
Public program on Hiv-aids:
Where 300 community people participated. It was organized in 3 high
schools, 212 boys and 150 girls participated. Awareness was created
through Rally, street play and talk on HIV-AIDs which reached to the
truck drivers, auto drivers, youths, high school children and community
too.
6 youths underwent training on areca plate production. Areca Production
is going on and has started to earn profit to the federation and has
given job opportunity for 4 youths.
13 youths benefitted from the beautician course in 3 different centers
i.e. Ujire, Belthangady, Venoor. Among them 8 have already got jobs and
rest will start their own self-employment through the loan facility.
Building of communal harmony:
Celebrated common religious feasts like Deepavali, Christmas in the
community. The leaders belonging to the various faiths had interaction
on how to appreciate good religious values of each other.
Leadership development program was organized in the community, 21 Girls
and 59 Boys, Total 80 Youths benefited from this Program.
Career guidance program was organized to the SSLC and PUC students, 59
Boys and 71 Girls participated and benefited from the same.
Child & Youth engagement program, 300 members participated. It brought
out the hidden talents of the scattered youth in the community and built
the rapport between the youths, parents and children.
Six staff members participated and learnt typewriting and basics of
computers. It helped to improve reporting skills
25 rural backward youths also learnt computer skills and special
concession is given to the students to encourage many to avail this
facility.
Support was given to the 15 students to continue their education in
Diploma in agriculture. 6 have got jobs, and rests pursue their higher
education.
A retreat was organized for the staff members and all the project staff
participated in this program and learnt to adopt creative and innovative
working skills.
Exposure to successful small scale industries, 30 members participated
and underwent firsthand experience of the power machine stitching
training of various types of dresses.
4 youth clubs consists of 80 youth members are involved in various
developmental activities to become involved and skilled youths.
Training on fashion designing and embroidery course: Embroidery 10,
fashion designing 53 candidates participated. 8 youths have received
jobs in the shops earning rupees 3000/- plus per month and rest two
design cloths being at home.
Life skill training was given to 26 school teachers, in order to guide
the children in necessary cases.
Motivational Support was given to Nursing, D.Ed, Diploma, ITI, PUC, and
Degree students of backward communities. 30 youths participated and
benefited.
Motor Driving and Motor repair training is given to 20 youths and among
them 3 have received jobs and rest yet to complete their training.
7 Sponsor children and 8 staff members participated in the National 60th
event anniversary and in state level 5 sponsor children and 3 staff
members participated.
In Networking with Government department & other likeminded NGO, all the
departments of the Taluka members participated in this program and
discussed about the community development programs and also availed many
schemes.
Even 60 SHG members received training in agriculture and 100 women
received saplings.
Project writing training is given to the staff members to improve the
skills in writing new projects.
Through the nursing aid course, 10 rural poor students are undergoing
Nursing in Fr.L.M. Pinto Health Centre.
Monthly and annual evaluation of the programs helped the Project staff
to find out the success and failures and thus to take appropriate steps
to move forward by overcoming the failures.
SHG cluster meetings were held once in three months regularly. 2800
members attended cluster meetings where they discussed about their
problems and resolved to solve the same.
Skill Oriented Training is given to 56 Girls and 144 Boys who benefitted
from the trainings like Mobile repair, Aesthetic training, Welding,
Rubber tapping, Soap & Phynoil making.
Special classes to Blunt students of 10th grade were arranged. In 3
backward schools special classes are organized to 75 boys and 109 girls
who secured good results.
Training was given to 6 youths in umbrella preparation who produced 2000
umbrellas and marketing is taking place.
Support to 50 dropout students especially those who discontinued due to
low capacity to continue higher education was given to buy tailoring
machines.
Support to privately appearing Candidates, 4 boys and 9 girl students
who are out of school due to various reasons like poverty, distant
colleges are motivated to appear privately for the SSLC, PUC and Degree
exams.
Sustainability of garment unit, a Button whole machine and with the
support of the local contribution 3 power machines are bought and now
there 12 young girls are working and earning their income.
Training was given to the 259 SSLC students for preparing for board
exams 112 boys and 147 girls benefited from this program.
76 eligible couples are given training in family life, personality
development, communication skills, and appreciation for the life
partner, family planning, understanding for each other, is provided.
Among them 10 couples are married and leading happy and good family
lives.
Cultural troupe training was given to the youth club; there are 6 girls
and 10 boys in this cultural troupe. They presented 3 shows on issues
like hazardous industries, child rights, communal harmony and Hiv aids.
Youth Day Celebration: All 4 youth club members came together and
celebrated the Yuvostava 2012 and participated in sports and cultural
activities.
Survey of Youth Employment identification of trade was done and Training
was given to the unemployed youth on various skill development
activities, after the training many have gone in for self-employment
activities.
Training on Tailoring was given to the SHG women and girls in the
community. 60 members benefitted from the tailoring course.
Beautician training is organized for poor girls in the Belthangady
villages. 13 candidates participated in this training.
DTP training Center was inaugurated; altogether 41 youths underwent
training on computer. Spare parts Repair training program is given in
Halepete. There were 44 candidates benefitted from this course.
Under workshop repair training, Service and repair was organized, 10
youths are undergoing this training. Screen printing training was given
to improve skills in printing and to increase their income 10 candidates
underwent this training. The Cloth bags unit trained 5 youths who have
received job in the same unit. Under Wormy Compost program, exposure
visit was organized for the women at Mularu. In this training 15 women
participated and gained knowledge on the production of compost.
Phynoil and Soap making training held in SHG groups and clusters. All
the cluster members benefited from this training program. Some members
have shown interest to start self employment of phynoil and Soap.
Catering training given to undertake the hotel business. There were 25
members who underwent this catering training.
Home Nursing Training given to six girl candidates in the first batch
and four candidates in the second batch, the duration of the training is
3 months, after the training and 2 years of internship they are
recruited for jobs where the trainees are guaranteed salary of Rupees
5000 per month.
Village Knowledge Center (VKC) is established to disseminate the
resource and knowledge to the remote villages.
Dairy management training held at Vimukti center in the month of
December, 20 beneficiaries attended the training who were also provided
with loan amount to purchase milch animals.
Formation of Self Help Groups:
50 SHGs are formed during the year who have learnt microfinance and
undergone self-employment training. The Book Keeping and audit Training
was given to these 50 SHGs who are now active members and many have
started their own self-employment activities and also raised their
family income.
40 SHGs members availed SJSY scheme. They received Rupees 4, 00,000 from
Bank. Out of four lakhs one lakh is subsidy. 10 members are using this
loan for Agriculture improvement and other 10 members have a plan to
start soap and phynoil production.
Cluster Representative Meeting, Capacity Building of the SHGs and
Federation Representative Meeting are being conducted time to time.
Twice a year federation Representative meetings are arranged in the
organization. The Representatives from the different clusters are
involved in discussion and planning for the betterment of each cluster
and SGHs.
Under the Health Insurance and Janashree Insurance scheme, newly formed
SHG members enrolled under Health Insurance and Janashree Insurance
scheme. Last year 155 families enrolled under Health insurance and 35
members availed the insurance rupees 127031/-. And this year total 220
families enrolled under Health Insurance. This year 76 families enrolled
under Janashree Insurance scheme. The health Insurance and Janashree
insurance schemes are great support which gives guarantee for the
economically backward families.
Under the Bridge Foundation 45 members borrowed loan of 15000 each and
used for the various business like Fish, Goat, Hotel, Mobile Shop, areca
unit to begin the self employment.
The Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra is grateful for the Funding agencies
and well-wishers for their continued support and encouragement without
whom, the beneficiaries would not have been able to raise their economic
standard and also to live a happy and healthy dignified life.
